Now that I am vegan (pronounced vi-gən), yellow rice tends to be off the menu because of it's use of chicken dust. However, I found some yellow jasmine rice that was chicken free the other day! Anyway, so there's another type of dust in there that begs for an answer:
what really is it!?
Saffron — the most expensive food on earth!
|
Left is fraudulent saffron and the right is the real deal. |
With that said, the 99 cent bag of yellow rice mix certainly does not include the most expensive food on earth! So what is it?
|
Saffron will turn yellow when soaked. |
That is an answer we may very well never know. But why is real saffron so expensive? Basically, it comes from a very picky flower that's hard to grow and requires substantial labor just to produce one gram. The real saffron flavor is said to be sublime. I will just have to leave that to my tasty imagination.
